I'm Leavin on a Jet Plane

First there was an engagement, then a fabulous wedding in Puerto Rico and now we are off to finish this major event in our lives with a European honeymoon. We will be spending 3 days in Prague, visiting castles that are 1,000 years older than the whole of the United States as well as secret gardens, jazz clubs, pubs and Grande Cafes (I don't even know what a Grande Cafe is, but apparently they have a lot of them in Prague). After Prague, we take a jumper flight to Croatia, where we will spend a day in Split and then split to Hvar (pronounced hwar)for 2 days of lounging in the sun, picking lavender, snorkeling and taking boat trips. Our final leg of the trip will be renting a car and driving down the Damlatian coast to Dubrovnik, where we will be staying in a hotel that is within the ancient city walls. Can we talk about how excited I am for this trip? I leave you with this poem from my friend Sue, which pretty much sums up the time we are going to have.

Croatia, Croatia
Here we come
Sun and sea
Discovery fun

Euro fashions
In the shops
Grappa, ouzo
Many shots

Al Gore Would Be Proud

I would like to announce that I think I have the smallest carbon footprint in all of New York (and maybe the world). Living in a large city already gives you a pretty small footprint because you almost always take mass transit, you have to buy food in small portions every day, which reduces waste and doesn't have as much packaging. I also don't have children, so there isn't all the diapers and garbage from those juicy drink boxes. But, this Summer has proven that my footprint can get even smaller. How? Because of our 100 year old apartment, that's how. Right now we have 3 air conditioners in our apartment, 1 in each room. They are the smallest air conditioners they make. You can only run 1 of those air conditioners at a time before you blow all the fuses in the apartment. What happens when you blow the fuses? You have to run down 4 flights of stairs, with a flashlight in hand and head to the equipment room where you then have to find the switch to our apartment and re-set everything. What happens when you run 1 air conditioner and then want to make toast or brew a cup of coffee? See first scenario.
Last night, Dan and I were sitting on the couch watching t.v. I said I wanted to go into the bedroom to read. Dan said that it is more comfortable to read on the couch and that I should stay in the living room. I told him that I was going into the bedroom and turning on the air conditioner in there and if he wanted to survive in the heat and avoid blowing fuses, he would need to turn off the t.v. and the air conditioner in the living room and join me immediately. He did. See, this low carbon footprint thing is also good for our "together time".

Life is Good

Just For Today I will live one day only, forgetting yesterday and tomorrow, and not trying to solve the whole problem of life at once.
Just For Today I will be unafraid of life and death; unafraid to enjoy the beautiful and be happy. People are as happy as they make up their minds to be.
Just For Today I will adjust myself to what is, and try not to make everything over to suit me. If I cannot have what I like, I will try to like what I have.
Just For Today I will be agreeable, cheerful, charitable, do my best, praise people for what they do, not criticize them for what they cannot do; and if I find fault, I will forgive it and forget it. I will try not to improve or regulate anybody except for myself.
Just For Today I will have a plan. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have one. It will save me from worry, hurry and indecision.
Just For Today I will get off my nerves and not get on theirs. I will appreciate them for what they do and what they are.
Just For Today I will not show it if my feelings are hurt.
Just For Today I will find a little time for quiet, to relax and to realize what life is and can be, and get a better perspective of myself.
Just For Today I will look at life with fresh eyes and discover the wonder of it; I will know that as I give to the world so the world will give to me.

This was posted the the condolences page of a friend who died of breast cancer this week. I thought I would share because it is such a sweet reminder about life, what it is all about and the joy of enjoying every day. You never know how many days you are going to get.
